Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri is currently the third-highest goal-scorer among active players in international matches. The Indian footballer is only behind first-placed Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Lionel Messi of Argentina, with 84 goals to his name in 131 international matches.
Sunil Chhetri is a Nepali-origin Indian professional footballer who plays as a forward and captains both Indian Super League club Bengaluru and the India national team.
Chhetri is the only Indian player to score an international hat-trick thrice. Sunil has won the AIFF Player of the Year award a record seven times – in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2022.
The 38-year-old Chhetri is third on the list of active footballers with the most international goals with 84 strikes to his name, behind Cristiano Ronaldo (117) and Lionel Messi (90).
In this match, he scored his 84th goal and made a new record. He has now equaled the international exploits of the legendary Real Madrid and Hungarian player Ferenc Puskas. Earlier in October 2021, Sunil Chhetri had surpassed the record of 77 goals by the legendary football player Pele.
